Gear catalogs make every gadget look essential. In the field, usefulness matters more than novelty.
Three purchases worth questioning
- Pocket wire saws: Compact but often awkward for repeated cutting. A folding saw may be more useful where collecting and cutting wood is allowed.
- Oversized multitools: Do you need 35 attachments—or just pliers, a blade and a screwdriver?
- Magnesium fire starters: They can work, but require practice and dry preparation. A lighter and a protected backup ignition source may be more convenient.
Always respect local fire restrictions and Leave No Trace practices. What gadget did you stop carrying?
