Choosing insulation is about balancing weight, warmth, moisture and price—not declaring one material universally best.
Down insulation
Quality down offers excellent warmth for its weight and compresses efficiently. Untreated down can lose much of its loft when soaked, although water-resistant treatments and careful protection can improve real-world performance. Drying can take time.
Synthetic insulation
Synthetic fills generally retain more useful insulation when damp and can dry faster. They may be bulkier or heavier for comparable warmth, though modern designs vary considerably.
Choose for the trip
For a dry, weight-sensitive backpacking trip, down is attractive. For frequent wet conditions or a limited budget, synthetic may be more forgiving. Neither jacket or sleeping bag prevents hypothermia if you are wet, exposed and inadequately sheltered. Protect insulation from rain and carry an appropriate sleep system.
