Waterproof vs. Breathable: Why Rain Jackets Feel Wet Inside

A wet feeling inside a rain jacket doesn’t always mean rain leaked through. Sweat, condensation and a saturated outer fabric can all contribute.

Why shells wet out

Many waterproof-breathable shells pair a waterproof barrier with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outer fabric. When DWR wears down, the face fabric can absorb water and breathability can feel reduced.

What to do

  • Clean the shell according to its care label.
  • Restore DWR only with a compatible treatment.
  • Check seams, zippers and worn areas for actual leakage.
  • Use vents and layering to manage perspiration.

Drying temperatures and treatments vary by jacket. Follow the garment maker’s instructions rather than applying heat blindly.
